The Film Show - Talkin' Movies with Breffni O'Sullivan, Jon Hozier-Byrne and Seamus Hanly
AFVRA is a podcast series run by SOAS students of African film and video, and led by Dr Lindiwe Dovey, Senior Lecturer in African film and performance arts at SOAS. Its main purpose is to offer sophisticated reviews of contemporary and rare African films, although it also acts as an archive for a wide range of material on African film, including interviews with film directors, reviews of film festivals, and recordings of panel discussions. It responds to a climate in which there is increasingly less support for professional film criticism of all kinds, and in which the need to closely analyse the artistic and cultural production of African and African diasporic filmmakers could not be more urgent. As the African film and cultural studies scholar Professor Manthia Diawara has emphasised, it is just such close analysis of the films themselves that has often been lacking in formal, academic African film studies. AFVRA aims to contribute to filling this gap in an informal, audible, and easily accessible way. It is in part inspired by other initiatives that have attempted, and are attempting, to document African and African diasporic experiences and imaginaries. Its makers firmly believe in the importance of creating archives for present and future use if we are to grapple with and try to understand the continuous and complex historical evolution of African filmmaking. We hope you enjoy listening to the podcasts and welcome your feedback. AFVRA is not intended as an exclusive venture, so if you would like to get involved, please contact us.

My name's Dr Nina Lübbren. I'm an art historian and senior lecturer in film studies at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, England. On this page, you can find my podcasts on how to write a university essay. You will learn to construct an argument and research your topic. My talks use film and art as examples but are relevant for students in all of the arts and humanities). Enjoy the podcasts! If you do, let me know via feedback: thanks! :-)
