Take your best day and your darkest momentand multiply by a million. Of Two Minds is an award-winning feature documentary from the creative team behind Wordplay, I.O.U.S.A, Superheroes and These Amazing Shadows that explores the extraordinary lives, struggles and successes of a few of the over five million Americans living with bipolar disorder. Personal stories of harrowing events, medical mazes, discrimination and the effects of social stigma blend together to create a compelling look at a generation coming out of the "bipolar closet." Of Two Minds puts an authentic human face on bipolar disorder, providing an intimate, sometimes painful, sometimes painfully funny look at those who live in its shadows: our parents and children, our friends and lovers...and ourselves.
Of Two Minds
Three psychiatrists (with private practice, forensic, and consultation-liaison perspectives) from the Shrink Rap blog -- Dinah, Clinkshrink and Roy -- talk about topics related to psychiatry, mental illness, neurology & brain disease, while trying not to make it too boring. The blog and podcast are aimed at a psychiatrist audience, but are often interesting to a lay audience or other health professionals. Common topics are psychotherapy, depression & bipolar disorder, anxiety, antidepressants and other psychiatric medications or drugs, forensics, psychology, and patient rights. We also discuss fellow health care bloggers' recent posts.
My Three Shrinks
The Depression in the Family Podcast is for family members or friends of someone with depression or bipolar disorder. In each episode, you’ll learn about common depression and bipolar symptoms. You’ll feel supported as the featured guests, an expert and family member with a personal perspective on the episode’s topic, examine the family member’s role as an advocate for getting help for loved ones. They share common struggles among caregivers such as finding clinicians, paying for treatment, and caregiver burnout.
Depression in the Family
A cardinal feature of bipolar disorder is the irregular recurrence of alternating abnormal mood states including depression, mania, and mixed states. Mania is frequently revealed retrospectively; patients are often not accurate in their recall of the severity and duration of symptoms, which can add further complexity to diagnosis. Symptoms of mania can include racing thoughts, pressured speech, irritability, lack of sleep, sexual preoccupation, excessive energy, and expansive mood, all of which can lead to problems at home, work, or school. Symptoms vary across individuals and disease course, and are often accompanied by comorbidities, all of which can pose diagnostic challenges. Delayed treatment has been shown to be associated in some cases with increased hospitalizations, greater risk of suicide, emergence of comorbid conditions, and global impairment. Once stabilized, maintenance treatment—pharmacotherapy, patient and family education, and psychosocial support—must be considered to prevent relapse, achieve better stability of mood, and improve function. In this interactive and evidence-based neuroscienceCME Live and On Demand activity, the expert faculty will translate the evidence to improve outcomes in patients through better recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of bipolar mania. This activity also includes a special "After the Show" segment during which the faculty answers additional audience questions in an informal Q&A session.
Bipolar Mania: Improving Recognition, Diagnostic Accuracy, and Evidence-Based Treatment
Bipolar disorder is a complicated and severe mental disorder associated with a recurrent or chronic course, insufficient clinical response, and psychosocial impairment in a substantial number of patients. Bipolar disorder presents with pleomorphic signs and symptoms varying from depression to hypomania, full-blown mania, mixed states, and psychosis. Due to the complexity of the disease, the assessment of patients with bipolar disorder poses a difficult challenge to clinicians. Upon diagnosis, it is paramount to understand the different classifications of medications available for treatment to ensure the patient is getting the best care possible based on evidence and treatment guidelines considering safety and long-term efficacy. In this neuroscienceCME Live and On Demand activity, the faculty will apply a chronic disease model to the diagnosis and management of bipolar mania focusing on achievement of performance measure-based benchmarks that can improve patient outcomes. This activity also includes a special "After the Show" segment during which the faculty answers additional audience questions in an informal Q&A session.

Optimal management of bipolar disorder begins with accurate diagnosis. The Depression and Bipolar Alliance reported that the misdiagnosis rate is 67% for bipolar patients with the most common misdiagnoses being unipolar depression (60%), anxiety disorder (26%), schizophrenia (18%), and borderline or antisocial personality disorder (17%). When diagnosis is inaccurate or delayed, initial therapy is not properly derived or promptly delivered. In this series of neuroscienceCME Chart Reviews, the faculty will take participants through a series of patient cases focusing on assessment, treatment, and treatment adherence to improve the long-term management of patients with bipolar disorder. Faculty will engage participants in the discussion and development of best practice tips to apply in practice.
