Computer Science E-1: Understanding Computers and the Internet is a course offered each fall at Harvard University's Extension School. It is part of the school's Distance Education Program, which means that students can take this course via the Internet. This course is all about understanding: understanding what's going on inside your computer when you flip on the switch, why tech support has you constantly rebooting your computer, how everything you do on the Internet can be watched by others, and how your computer can become infected with a worm just by turning it on. Visit us on the Web at www.computerscience1.org.

Computer Science 50: Introduction to Computer Science I is a first course in computer science at Harvard College for concentrators and non-concentrators alike. More than just teach you how to program, this course teaches you how to think more methodically and how to solve problems more effectively. As such, its lessons are applicable well beyond the boundaries of computer science itself. That the course does teach you how to program, though, is perhaps its most empowering return. With this skill comes the ability to solve real-world problems in ways and at speeds beyond the abilities of most humans. Visit us on the Web at www.cs50.org.

I was dragged kicking and screaming through a classic piano education at the age of 5, that managed neither to notice my dyslexia nor my perfect pitch, cleverly disguised as pretending to read music. After giving up piano, I taught myself guitar and actually thought I was Jimmy Page when I was a teenager, highlighted by having a Zeppelin and Rush cover group with both Andre Peterson and Mike Malinin (who went on to be the drummer of the Goo Goo Dolls). At the University of Chicago, I met a janitor by day, Blues piano legend by night, named "Speedy", that introduced me to the blues clubs of the South Side and restored my love of the piano and began my lifelong love of Jazz. Inbetween a Mathematics degree and a Computer Science degree, I attended the University of Miami Jazz Program for a semester, hanging out and jamming in the practice rooms for several years before being kicked out. After moving to New Jersey, I became a piano student of Joanne Brackeen, who is an amazing source of inspiration as a musician and person. Today I am trying to encourage myself into making greater use of my talent, and this page is a way of publicly acknowledging that gift.

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is an 1884 science fiction novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott. As a satire, Flatland offered pointed observations on the social hierarchy of Victorian culture. However, the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions; in a foreword to one of the many publications of the novella, noted science writer Isaac Asimov described Flatland as "The best introduction one can find into the manner of perceiving dimensions." As such, the novella is still popular amongst mathematics, physics and computer science students. (Summary by Wikipedia)
